Applying for a position is an important step in your career journey, and taking the
time to prepare a strong application can make a meaningful difference. The information
below is designed to help guide you through the application process and provide practical
tips to ensure your materials are complete, clear, and aligned with the job you are
seeking.
From preparing your documents and reviewing the job announcement, to completing the
application and following up after submission, these tips will help you present your
qualifications effectively and avoid common mistakes. We encourage applicants to review
these suggestions carefully before starting their application to help ensure a smooth
and successful application experience.
- Review application requirements and be sure to give yourself sufficient time to complete
you application.
- Gather all of your application materials: resume, transcripts, cover letter etc. Pay
attention to the deadline date.
- Study the job description in its entirety: read the job description and minimum qualifications
carefully.
- Identify key words in the job description and tailor your resume accordingly.
- Write an original cover letter – be specific to accomplishments and skills. It should
not be a re-write of the application or resume. Let it showcase your personality,
qualifications and desire for the job.
- Prepare professional references and alert references beforehand.
- Research the institution/organization/hiring department.
- Ensure that your transcripts are complete, listing your name, degree title and degree
conferral date.
- If applicable, have international transcripts evaluated by a NACES agency prior to
applying. We recommend a detailed evaluation that includes course listings, however,
general evaluations are accepted as well. Explore vendors at: www.naces.org
- Apply to your selected job, then create or log in to your Government Jobs Account.
If you have trouble logging in, call the Applicant Support Line at (855)-524-5627.
- Don’t sell yourself short and don’t assume the employer will know what you do. “Connect
the dots” for them.
- Follow directions and provide accurate information in each tab.
- On competency-based questions – give examples and don’t be vague.
- Employers seek organized materials, refined writing, and confidence (not arrogance).
Candidates need to demonstrate suitability by giving short, positive answers that
are grammatically correct and free of errors. Embrace the notion of “quality over
quantity”.
- Do not put “References or transcripts available upon request”.
- Don’t list attachments as numbers ex. IMG_4020.jpg. Title them so it is clear to the
screeners/panel. If you have many files, then consider merging them rather than uploading
them all individually.
- Fill out all fields in the application and do not put "Refer to CV or resume".
- Refrain from providing attachments that are not listed under required application
materials.
- Keep it relevant – add information that is most relevant to the job for which you
are applying.
- Make sure employment history is in the correct order.
- Your degree title should match your transcripts. Do not list your degree level (Eg:
Bachelor's, Master's) within the Major section.
- Take your time; if possible, save your work and finish the application in multiple
sessions to keep your mind fresh.
- Review your application for errors. Submitted applications cannot be modified.
- Avoid re-submitting your application multiple times.
- Make sure application contents are consistent with your CV/resume.
- Ensure that you’ve attached everything that is required.
- Ask someone to read your application and application materials before you submit it.
- Do I understand the job description, qualifications and know about the organization?
- Do I meet the required selection criteria?
- Am I a good fit for the job?
- What key words and phrases are in the job description?
- Can I improve my CV/resume or cover letter to make it through the application screening
and selection process?
- Does my CV/resume clearly show how I qualify and add value to the organization?
- Have I made it clear how I differentiate myself from other similar candidates?
- Have I followed the application instructions specified in the job announcement?
- Check your email often.
- Make sure you add the employer to your “acceptable emails” so they don’t go to spam.
- If you update your contact information, inform the employer right away.
- If you need to call about your application, prepare your questions beforehand and
have your name and the job number (Eg: CL25-01234, AC26-04321) associated with the
job announcement on hand.

At Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD), we are committed to a fair,
transparent, and equitable hiring process. Our recruitments utilize a shared governance
model that brings together faculty, staff, administrators, and equity representatives
to evaluate candidates and make hiring recommendations.
Because multiple groups participate in the review process, it may take approximately
four to six weeks after the application deadline before candidates are notified regarding interview selection.
During this time, your application progresses through several stages of review.
Once the job posting closes, Human Resources conducts an initial review of all applications
to determine whether applicants meet the minimum qualifications listed in the job
announcement.
During this stage:
- Applications are reviewed for minimum qualifications and required application materials.
- Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications are removed from further consideration.
- Applicants who do not advance are notified by email.
- Qualified applicants move forward to the Screening Committee Review.
This review helps ensure that all candidates considered by the Screening Committee
meet the established requirements for the position.
After the minimum qualifications review is completed, qualified applications are forwarded
to a Screening Committee for evaluation. Committee members independently review and
score applications using established criteria that may include:
- Relevant education, training, and certifications
- Professional or teaching experience
- Subject matter expertise
- Experience serving diverse communities
- Professional accomplishments and continued growth
- Community involvement and engagement
Once all applications have been evaluated, scores are compiled and the highest-ranked
candidates are invited to participate in interviews.
RSCCD interviews are designed to promote consistency, equity, and fairness. Interview
panels typically include faculty, staff, administrators, and an equity representative.
Each candidate is asked the same standardized questions.
Interview Question Review
Prior to the interview, candidates may be provided a brief period to review the interview
questions. Candidates may take notes and refer to them during the interview.
Oral Interview
Candidates participate in a structured interview that may include questions related
to:
- Professional background and experience
- Collaboration and work style
- Problem-solving and decision-making
- Teaching or discipline-specific knowledge (for faculty positions)
- Leadership and communication skills
Examples of commonly used interview questions include:
Opening Question: Tell us about yourself and what makes you uniquely qualified for this position.
Diversity Question: What experience have you had working in an ethnically and culturally diverse environment?
Closing Question: Is there anything else you would like to share regarding your qualifications or interest
in the position?
Presentation (If Applicable)
Some positions may require candidates to complete a presentation as part of the interview
process.
Presentations allow candidates to demonstrate communication skills, subject matter
expertise, and teaching or leadership abilities.
Typical presentation requirements may include:
- A presentation lasting approximately 10–15 minutes
- A topic provided in advance
- Information regarding available equipment and technology
Following the interviews:
- Committee members independently evaluate and rank candidates.
- Evaluations are completed confidentially before committee discussion.
- Results are compiled by the Committee Chair.
- Recommended candidates move forward in the recruitment process.
Depending on the position, additional steps may include:
- Reference checks
- Final interviews
Candidates selected to advance will be contacted directly regarding next steps.
This page is designed to help you understand the minimum qualifications required for
each position and what documentation you’ll need to provide when you apply. In the
Minimum Qualifications section, you’ll find clear explanations of the baseline experience,
training, or education needed to be considered. This helps you quickly determine whether
a role is the right fit and what you may want to highlight in your application.
If you’ve completed education outside the United States, the Foreign Degrees section
walks you through how to submit your records, along with tips for ensuring they meet
evaluation standards. And if your background doesn’t match traditional degree paths,
the Equivalency Process section explains how your unique combination of experience
and training may still qualify you. Together, these sections aim to make the requirements
transparent and supportive—helping you move forward with confidence.
Applicants for faculty positions in California Community Colleges are required to
meet certain minimum qualifications for faculty and educational administrator positions,
as set out in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California
Community Colleges handbook published by the California Community Colleges Chancellor's
Office.
If applicants for faculty positions do not meet the Minimum Qualifications provided
by the Chancellor's office, they may still be eligible for a faculty position if they
successfully apply under the equivalency review process.
Transcripts from countries other than the United States must be evaluated by an agency
that is approved by or a member of the National Association of Credentials Evaluation Service (NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE), or Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).
Rancho Santiago Community College District accepts foreign transcript evaluations
from any agency that is a member of either Association of International Credential
Evaluations, Inc. (AICE) or National Association of Credential Evaluation Services
(NACES).
Purpose of Transcript Evaluation
Official transcripts and/or evaluated foreign transcripts are used to:
- Verify that an applicant meets the minimum qualifications in the discipline for which
they applying.
- Establish salary/class placement.
Applicants who have completed college or university course work at an institution
outside of the United States that is not a post-secondary institution accredited by
an accreditation agency recognized by either the US Department of Education or the
Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) must obtain a complete evaluation
of foreign transcripts, degrees, and other relevant documents.
Only include the foreign transcript evaluation (not the foreign transcript) with your
application.
Salary / Class Placement
Human Resources evaluates transcripts to determine salary/class placement. If you
are requesting a foreign transcript evaluation, then make sure to request to have the
specific units evaluated. For example, request that the number of units earned per
course and the level of the course taken (upper division, graduate, lower division,
undergraduate, and so on) is included on the evaluation. This evaluation will assist in
getting placed at the highest class placement if you are hired at RSCCD.
What is the Equivalency Review Process?
The equivalency review process is used to consider qualified candidates when titles
of degrees are different from the required degrees.
Applicants whose degree titles do not match exactly the degree(s) listed in the job
posting and request an equivalency will be reviewed by the equivalency committee for
determination of equivalency. If granted equivalency the applicant will remain in
the applicant pool. If equivalency is not granted the applicant will be notified via
email.
Being granted equivalency does not guarantee you an interview.
When and How to Apply for Equivalency
When you apply for a faculty position, you will be asked the following supplemental
questions:
Do you meet the minimum qualifications or the specific equivalencies described in
the Job Announcement? If no, go to attachments, click add supplemental attachment,
choose "Document to Support Request for Equivalencies" and upload.
If Yes, enter N/A. If No, please provide evidence of other equivalencies you wish to be considered: e.g. transcripts,
publications, work products or other demonstration of required mastery. Describe here
and upload supporting documents before submitting your application.
You can only apply for an equivalency determination when you submit an application
for an open position.
Notification of Equivalency
You will be notified via email whether you are granted or denied equivalency. If
you are granted equivalency your application will remain in the pool. If you are not
granted equivalency you will not move forward in the pool.
Being granted equivalency does not guarantee you an interview.
